Maya Yoga Vinyasa Fusion with Nicki Doane

Ask Our Expert: Nicki Doane
"How long should I tell my students to follow a particular sequence?" "How do I let my students know that it is normal for strong emotional issues to surface during asana?" "Can you give advice on incorporating poses into a vinyasa class to strengthen gluteal muscles and hamstrings?" Nicki Doane answers these questions and more.

Power to the Peaceful
Sep 9, 2008
Saturday marked an unusually hot day for San Francisco, but the unforgiving sun didn't stop 1,200 yogis from gathering in an open field in Golden Gate Park to practice Maya Yoga and AcroYoga in the name of peace.

Westside Yoga Studio

June 2008 Playlist - Nicki Doane & Eddie Modestini
Maya Yoga teachers Nicki Doane and Eddie Modestini like music that speaks to the yogic precept of ahimsa (nonharming). "We play artists who sing about the kinds of things that we teach in our yoga classes," says Doane, "like being tolerant, being loving, and being more conscientious humans who want to take care of the planet."

Practice in Paradise
Jun 1, 2008
Silky white sand, transparent turquoise waters, an ocean-view platform covered with graceful bodies in Triangle Pose. One look at the yoga retreat pictures and I wanted to be there, hoping that I, too, could drop back from the distractions of everyday life and step into a deeper inner awareness.

Breathe in, breathe out. Then get crazy.
Jan 27, 2008
If you had spent any time near the Embarcadero this past weekend, you might've noticed a lot of healthy-looking people, mostly women, with rolled-up foam mats jutting out of their bags and backpacks.

Blogs: Samadhi & the City
Sep 13, 2007
At a foggy Speedway Meadow last Saturday morning, a couple of hours before Michael Franti's Power to the Peaceful concert began, scores of yogis gathered for a free community Yoga Jam. Some were sitting on yoga mats and some on the grass, some wearing yoga clothes, others jeans and even pajamas. The crowd was a mix of yoga teachers, locals, and some hippie teenagers thrown in for good measure.

Yoga Master Class: It's a Wrap
Dec 21, 2007

The first time my four-year-old son Matteo saw me in Yoganidrasana (Yogic Sleep Pose) he said, "Mama, that's crazy!" I have to agree with him; this pretzel-like pose can look a bit extreme at first. But once you're able to get into the pose safely, you'll find that the experience is anything but crazy. In fact, the shape of Yoganidrasana—a deep forward bend with the limbs drawn in close to the torso—stimulates pratyahara, or the deep state of peaceful relaxation that comes from withdrawing the senses.

Hawaiian Islands Yoga Tour
Dec 21, 2007

Instead of greeting each other with a kiss, the traditional Hawaiian welcoming and parting gesture consists of pressing one's nose close against another's to exchange sacred breath. In fact, the Hawaiian sound "ha"--the root of aloha--literally means "full of breath." This idea of filling yourself with breath, or as yogis call it prana, is just one of the many similarities that make practicing yoga in the Aloha State a natural fit.

Insight From Injury
Dec 21, 2007
If the practice of hatha yoga was meant to heal, why are so many yogis getting hurt?

The Philosophy of Touch: Exploring the Benefits and Risks of Hands-on Assistance
Dec 21, 2007

The subject of continual debate, adjustments run the gamut from the helpful to hurtful. As you determine the role that adjustments play in your teaching style, consider suggestions and examples from some of yoga's master teachers.

Nicki Doane: Yogi, supermom, environmentalist
When you get the chance to put Nicki Doane's working-mother-of-two BTW-I'm-a-yoga-star-too life on pause for long enough to share a real conversation with her, the first thing you notice is that she's a disarmingly warm woman. Grounded, quick to smile, tuned in to what you're saying, a natural dark-haired beauty.
